A ranger-guided trip to White Sands National Monument's Lake Lucero, the source of the white sand, is schedule on a monthly basis. Reservations are required and may be obtained by calling the monument's headquarters at 575-679-2599 or 575-479-6124.
Participants will drive their own vehicles 17 miles over paved roads and then hike a mile to the lake. Each person should have sufficient drinking water, a snack if desired, sunglasses, sunscreen, stout walking shoes and suitable dress for the weather.
A primitive backpacker's campsite is available on a first - come, first served basis. Backpackers must register in person at the visitor center. No advance registrations.
