The Rail Heritage Centre Thirlmere is Australia's oldest and largest railway museum providing visitors with the most complete overview of railway heritage to be found in NSW.
A step back in time, to an era when everyone travelled by train, it is a nostalgic visit for older visitors, and a novel and educational experience for children of all ages.
The centre is operated by the NSW Rail Transport Museum, the largest rail heritage organisation in NSW.
The centre includes over 125 railway exhibits representing the development of the NSW railways from the late 1800s to the present day.
Visitors can view inside carriages and locomotive cabs, see the changes in design, style and technology of railway travel and relive the atmosphere of bygone times.
The exhibits are undercover, so weather is not usually a problem for our visitors.
The Rail Heritage Centre is currently undergoing a major upgrade to provide new and improved experiences and facilities but remains open to the public throughout the upgrade and visitors will see more changes and enhancements taking place.
The newest attraction is the recently completed maintenance operations facility and relocated 105 foot turntable which make up the centrepiece of the new operations precinct for the maintenance of operational heritage rolling stock. It is the first roundhouse built in Australia for 45 years.
Up to eight items of rolling stock can be worked on simultaneously, and visitors now have a behind-the-scenes view of the important maintenance work that is performed at the centre.
The site incorporates the heritage listed 1880s railway station of Thirlmere and the Thirlmere Heritage Railway where visitors on the first and third Sundays of the month (March-November) can a nostalgic steam train journey to a bygone railway age.
