Alumine lies in a high mountain area, close to Lanin National Park. It is located on the right banks of its homonymous river, 954 miles away from Buenos Aires and 204 miles from Neuquen Capital City. Its uniquely beautiful landscape is full of pehuen or araucaria araucana forests, a millenarian tree that abounds in the area. It lies within the Patagonia of Lakes area.
Alumine is a town with approximately 3,642 inhabitants in the urban area, and 2,000 in the rural area. Its economy depends on ovine and bovine livestock breeding, forest exploitation and tourism, since it is the main service centre in the area of Pehuenia.
The Pehuenia area is an important bird watching area, where you can see flamingos, blacknecked swans, and different species of ducks. It is possible to practise some big game hunting as well, and go fishing, by spinning, fly fishing or trolling methods. Besides, you can take a tour around the neighbour country of Chile, through Icalma international border crossing.
There are different watercourses where sport fishing lovers can catch brown trout, rainbow trout, fontinalis trout and perches. Besides, you can practice water sports, like canoeing and rafting on Alumine River rapids. You can also do some adventure tourism, practising activities like trekking, kayaking, and horseback riding.
Another interesting attraction is the Batea Mahuida Hill where you can enjoy a snowpark. This volcano has a lagoon on its summit.
